THE Metal Slug series is one of the finest examples of a 2D shooter.
It's been going for years, and its rock-hard gameplay and iconic graphical style have helped it to become a cult favourite.
Now, Metal Slug 7 has found a home on DS, but unfortunately, the grand old shooter is getting a bit rusty around the edges.
Choosing between four characters, the player sets off on an orgy of destruction and mayhem, using shotguns, grenades, flamethrowers and machine guns to get through the action-packed levels.
While the over-the-top run and gun action remains firmly intact, and the visuals as beautifully crisp and full of charisma as they always have been, the whole package just feels a little stale. Yes, it's still great, mindless fun and the bosses are still brilliantly realised, but the problem is we've seen it all before.
The series has been going since the Nineties, but the core gameplay hasn't really evolved since then.
The end result is there's little here for anyone who has gorged themselves on previous versions.
For DS owners who are Metal Slug novices, by all means pick up a copy. You'll have a blast. But for people with multiple consoles, it's hard not to recommend Metal Slug Anthology - Wii, PSP, PS2 - over this, as it contains seven Metal Slug titles on one disc.
Metal Slug is a classic, but you really have to wonder how long it can continue. Maybe it's time for it to hang up its shotgun.
